Dean's Position on the Issues

Proper Role of Government – We should go back to the small and limited government that our founders intended and follow the Constitution as it was written.  The Constitution only changes through the mechanisms provided for in Article Five, not through interpretation. Too many times, we look to government as the answer to problems that it has no business getting into.  In addition, we look to the wrong levels of government to solve problems. (Federal getting into State issues, States getting into local, etc). The Federal Government must stay within the powers provided to it by our Constitution.

Energy – Our country should develop all forms of energy and they should compete in the free market. The federal government should not dictate to the states how they should produce or use energy.  The free market will always provide the best answer.

Health Care –Health care decisions should be made by the individual. Government should not be involved in a person’s free choice of health care in any way.  We should be able to buy insurance over state lines and there should be no mandates on insurance companies on what policies they should sell.  The government’s intervention has caused many of the issues and problems we face today.  Only the free market will get the costs under control and provide the best possible health care to the most number of people.

Afghanistan War - The debate on whether or not we should have gone into Afghanistan or not is over.  What is important now is that our policy be complete and firm, and our goals clearly defined.  We either need to go in full force and complete the mission, or get out.  We cannot afford to play games at our troop's expense.  They deserve much better than this.  I support our troops completely and pray for their success daily.

Budget and Taxes – Government should live within a balanced budget and should only run a deficit in times of real national emergencies.  If government is held to its proper role, taxes would not have to be so high.  The more the people ask government to do, the more power and money government will need, and the less freedoms we as individuals will have.

Borders and Immigration – We need to enforce our laws on immigration.   What is the point to having a law if it is not enforced?  The number of legal immigrants can be debated, and even a guest worker program, but our laws should not.

Religion - Our First Amendment protects our religious’ freedoms.  We have a freedom of religion, not from religion.

Abortion – Abortion is murder, morally wrong, and should be stopped in all cases other than the life of the mother.  Roe v. Wade was a bad Supreme Court decision, since there is no Constitutional right to abortion.  This is an argument that should be taken to the States where the people can exercise the powers guaranteed to them in the Constitution.

Climate Change –The debate on Climate Change is not settled. The evidence leans more toward the fact that man is not the cause.  Cap and Trade is bad policy based on bad “theories.”  We should not take away people’s freedoms and liberties based on faulty science.
